Physiotherapy for MMA

Over the last 25 years MMA has transformed from no holds barred organized brawls to one of the fastest growing sports in the world. It is now a modern combat sport, that involves techniques from disciplines around the world (Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Wrestling, Muay Thai, Boxing). Like in many other sports, physiotherapy has also become part of the MMA team for the management of injuries.

Injuries

Whether it’s drilling armbars, sparring or conditioning for fight camp, the body is constantly being pushed to the absolute limit. It is common that a few injuries are picked up along the way. Studies have shown that 60-90% of individuals who participate in in combat sports suffer from injuries in training or in competition. Here are some of the injuries that we see.

Grappling (BJJ, Wrestling) Striking (Boxing, Muay Thai)
Lower back pain

Knee Injuries (LCL/MCL)

Tennis elbow

Toe fractures, Ankle injuries

Concussion (dizziness, headaches)

Shoulder related pain (rotator cuff)

Hand fractures, Wrist injuries

How can Physiotherapy help?

Physiotherapist can treat a range of MMA injuries, from neck injuries (concussion, vestibular), shoulder injuries (rotator cuff/bursitis), elbow injuries (tennis elbow) and knee injuries (MCL/LCL/meniscus). The physiotherapist will assess and diagnose the injury. We will then address the issues with a variety of treatments (soft tissue massage, mobilizations, dry needling), and corrective exercises.

MMA is a full-on sport, and we understand how difficult it can be training around injuries. So, if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms/injuries or have any questions, feel free to come on into the clinic so that we can get you back to training pain free!
